Saving Cash at Walgreens 10/13/2009

Would you believe me if I told you that I bought all of these brand name items for $7.53?

It’s true and I’ll show you how I did it at Walgreens this week.  The basic idea is to combine items that are on sale with manufacturer’s coupons from your Sunday paper.  Then combine these with Walgreens Register Rewards (RR) for deals that you really can’t get anywhere else.

Here’s what I bought and the manufacturer’s coupons that I had:

Now this might not seem like such a bad deal for all these items but it gets better.  When I purchased these items, I received some Register Rewards (RR) which are as good as cash on my next purchase.

I received $8RR for buying the Ragu, Skippy, and Hellmann’s products.

I received $2RR for buying the Dentek floss.

I received $5RR for buying the Quaker products.

I received $1RR for buying the Trident Gum.

For a grand total of $16 in RR.

Subtract this from my total and the true cost of all of these items was only $7.53.

Here’s what it looks like broken down by item after the Register Rewards:

Tips From Today's Trip

  • Check expiration dates of the products.  I found expiration dates that were a few months later on items at the back of the shelf for the Hellmann’s Mayo.
  • Look for items with coupons inside or on the box.  The Quaker Instant Oatmeal that I bought had $4 worth of coupons printed inside the box.  I know I’ll be able to use these in the future.
  • Think your family won’t like the plain Ragu Old World Style Sauce?  It’s only 26 cents – you can afford to add some fresh sautéed peppers, mushrooms, and/or garlic for a little pizzazz!
  • Don’t buy items that you or your family won’t use before the expiration dates even if it’s seems like a really good deal.  This one can be a little hard for those thrifty folks like me.  Just remember if you waste something, it’s not a good deal no matter how cheap it is!
  • Be nice to the cashiers!  They have a tough (and mostly thankless) job and they do appreciate customers that are kind and patient.  Ask me how I know!
