Can You Get Any Good Deals at P.F. Chang’s?

My boyfriend got a gift certificate for P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and we finally got around to using it this weekend.  P.F. Chang’s is one of the signature restaurants built into the East View Mall and we had both been wanting to give it a try for a while.  Was it any good?  And the bigger question for this blog – can you find any good deals?

We were going on a Friday night and decided to give call ahead and make reservations – this was the best decision we could have made!  We walked into the restaurant and it was totally packed with people.  We had made reservations for 7:30pm and the hostess told us that they were a little behind but we would definitely be seated by 7:45pm.

While we were waiting we grabbed a couple of drinks at the bar.  This is our first test for any restaurant – can they make a decent vodka tonic?  They came out in relatively large glasses and to our delight they were good.  And the best part – they were only $5 each – sometimes chains will over-charge for cocktails but we thought this was quite reasonable.

We were seated at 7:45pm and after a quick look at the menu, we knew what we had to try.  The best chance at a deal on the menu seemed to be the “Chang’s for Two – Four Course Dinner.”  For $39.95, you got two cups of soup, one appetizer, two entrees, and two mini desserts.

The soup came first (you had a choice between hot & sour soup and egg drop soup).  It was pretty standard – but nothing much to write home about here.

Next came the appetizer -- we choose the salt & pepper calamari.  They were nice and crispy and came with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce.  There was also a side of what seemed to be a salt & pepper mix.  Not sure why we needed that as they were definitely salted enough.  The only minor complaint here was that the portion was a little bit on the small side.

For our entrees, we choose two spicy dishes – Chang’s Spicy Chicken and Shrimp A La Sichuan.  We enjoyed both entrees were good and they were definitely spicy.  Once again though the portions were a bit smaller than we were used to when we normally order Chinese food and both of us would have liked more rice with our dinners.  Never-the-less, since we did have soup and an appetizer, we did have enough leftovers for lunch the next day.

Finally came the mini desserts – these were basically little cakes/mousses served in shot glasses.  We thought these were cute and unique and really just the right amount of dessert after a big meal.

Overall, we probably didn’t get any special bargains (except maybe the $5 cocktails.) The portions were simply underwhelming.  What we did get was good food and a nice night out.  And to be honest, that’s why we save money in the first place!!  Because of that, when we’re looking for a good deal on Chinese, we’ll still hit up favorite Chinese Restaurant – Chen’s Garden.  Check it out…I’ll try to do a full review of the great bargains to be had there sometime soon!
